A Historic Tribute

The First Save is a short film inspired by the untold story of the Freedom House Ambulance Service — the first team of professionally trained Black paramedics in America.
Set in 1978, four years after Freedom House was shut down, the film follows Alexander Carter, a former paramedic who now drives a cab. When his young son discovers an old box of memorabilia, Alexander opens up about the night that changed his life: the first time he saved someone during the 1968 riots in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
Blending intimate storytelling with historical truth, The First Save is a fictional narrative rooted in real legacy. It honors the courage, skill, and humanity of Black first responders whose contributions were nearly erased from history.
This is not just a story about a rescue — it’s about the weight of legacy, the silence of forgotten heroes, and the power of passing truth from one generation to the next.
